Week of August 10, 2025
By Tom Smith – FredericksburgArea Waterfront & Real Estate Expert | River Bay Realty
August fishing remains strong across Virginia's Northern Neck and Chesapeake Bay. Calm mornings, stable water temps in the low 80s, and steady baitfish schools are fueling action for anglers targeting everything from striped bass and blue catfish in the Potomac River to cobia and Spanish mackerel on the Bay, plus speckled trout and puppy drum in the Rappahannock River.
Whether you're casting from a private dock or running the Bay, this week offers excellent opportunities to connect with the catch — and even better chances to find your ideal waterfront home that puts these hotspots right outside your door.
Prime Species: Slot stripers, blue cats, white perch, and spot.
Where to Go:
Early morning stripers hitting along Ragged Point ledges with white bucktails.
Puppy drum and trout active in the shallow grass flats near Coles Point at sunrise.
Colonial Beach Pier offering consistent perch and spot bites with bloodworms.
Best Bait & Technique: Cut menhaden for catfish; bloodworms for perch and spot.
Tom's Tip:
"Make your topwater lure presentations near shoreline structure on the early incoming tide to entice aggressive stripers."
Target Species: Spanish mackerel, bluefish, cobia, red drum.
Top Spots:
Fast trolling Spanish mackerel between Smith Point Light and Buoy 62 using Clark spoons behind planers.
Sight-casting cobia at Windmill Point Bar on calm days with live eels or chartreuse bucktails.
Tackle Recommendations: Use a combination of lighter spoons for mackerel and live bait rigs for cobia.
Tom's Tip:
"Focus on the falling tide during late morning when cobia push into shallower waters — watch for surface activity and be ready to cast."
Species in Action: Speckled trout, puppy drum, croaker, white perch.
Fishing Locations:
Evening action at Parrot Island grass beds for red drum and croaker.
Early morning trout bites in Carters Creek and Greenvale Creek using shrimp-tipped jigs.
Outgoing tide draws trout close to Urbanna Creek's mouth.
Bait & Presentation: Soft plastics in natural colors and popping cork rigs for trout and drum.
Tom's Tip:
"A stealthy approach works best in these shallow creeks — drift quietly or use a trolling motor to avoid spooking fish."
Tides: Sunrise incoming tide favors topwater action; afternoon outgoing tide improves bottom fishing.
Wind: Southwest winds 5–10 knots early week, shifting northwest later — great for midweek Bay runs.
Water: Generally clear, with minor algae patches near Windmill Point after recent rain.
I've been fishing these waters my whole life and specialize in helping clients find waterfront properties that put them steps from the best fishing spots in the region. Imagine fishing your own dock at sunrise and spending evenings relaxing with a Bay view — that's the lifestyle I help make possible.
